I remember a few years ago being asked to preach during Advent at a weekday event - just use the daily office readings I was told - it turned out to be the same as today - the Last Supper. It ssems a little strange to be reading these passion readings just before Christmas but it does us no harm to remind ourselves that the mystery of the incarnation is more than a moment in history - it has more significance in our history - in our salvation - than the moment of birth - there is a whole story there.
The story of the Last Supper is a story with which we can become over familiar or which can continue to amaze us week in week out as we come to the Eucharist (or day in day out!). "This is my Body".....this intimate and personal offering - something from one person to one person, the body of Christ for the bosy of Christ. I still get tingles when the reading turns up on these grey mornings in Advent or at those other times when we almost unexpectedly stumble across the riches and poverty of offering and sacrifice which the Gospel writers offer us.
In the riches of the season let us take the simplicity of Christ's offering. In the bleakness of our winter hearts, let us find the light of communion with Him in his sacrifice of love which we celebrate at this time, as in all times, with open hands and, we pray, open hearts. Come Lord Jesus, come!
