Responsibility

We are, it seems, experts on blame. Sometimes we blame other people for things and sometimes we take blame which should not be ours. We do this all the time to victims of crime - telling people that if they had been more careful then they would not have fallen prey to the thief or worse.

But the fact is, in some curious way, that allows the thief. That says, well if someone leaves it laying around perhaps it is understandable that you should steal it.

Justice is not just about challenging the surface questions of what belongs to who but about delving deeper into the heart of things, about asking why it is we say anything which is unacceptable or illegal is understandable.

This starts at home - where in our own lives are we living on this knife edge? Where are we telling ourselves that it is OK and making someone else into the victim of our choices - this is a tough examination to make - but as Jesus looks into our eyes, do we have any other choice but blunt honesty?
