Plastic Covers

I was feeling pleased with myself today as I had gone out and doused the front garden with one of those plant food feeders that attach to the hose. I went to do the back yard only to discover that my efforts in the front had been in vain as this was a new attachment and had plastic over the top of the food container - I will have to try again later - but at least the backyard got more than plain water!

As we consider Pentecost we might want to think about where our areas of resistance - deliberate or not - to the Spirit are. Just like my watering efforts - it is very possible to go around for a long time looking just like we are doing what we should be - looking like we are full of food and nutrients but then, when the plants don't grow or the same things keep repeating themselves, perhaps we realize that we have been doing things with plastic over us - not letting the Spirit in but somehow holding a shield over us to prevent God from truly working in us.

There is a song which goes "Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me." So, as we consider Pentecost let us pray that we are filled and renewed with God's life giving Spirit in a fresh way and that we are given grace to see and dismantle the covers which we so often put across parts of our lives.
