Looking in the mirror

Why is the world so down on me? Why are people so unreasonable? Why don't people understand? All of these are common enough questions but when we find ourselves asking them repeatedly we might do well to look in the mirror.

Human beings are designed to move and grow. When we stand still and expect the world to dance around us we are asking for trouble - we are doing something that even God does not do - it is fair to say that we are making ourselves into a sort of idol, a fixed point in the universe to which all else must bow.

But the God who calls us is kinetic, energetic and challenging - the God who calls us demands that we see each other as equal and God as the focus. This wonderful dancing God cannot be held on to or owned - so when we ask why people do not understand us in the Church - if we have heard that story again and again - perhaps we should ensure we are pursuing holiness of life in the image of Christ and not stability of life in the image of ourselves.
