We are spending Thanksgiving in North Carolina with family. Last night we heard noises outside and when we looked there was a raccoon after the garbage can. As we watched not just one but four of them knocked the can down and dragged it away from the house (yes it sounds unbelievable and that is what we thought too). Unable to stand the thought of the can disappearing down the mountain the dog and a brave husband with a flashlight were dispensed - the raccoons fled.
We were watching them through the storm screen and I can honestly say I have never seen them that close up before - it was quite amazing and I was sad that we were in competition over the can and the rubbish inside it.
Perhaps a good prelude to Thanksgiving - thanks for variety and a wonderfully interesting world but also thoughts of how that gratitude should translate into better stewardship and care for the world. I am not really into welcoming those raccoons back but humans are working on how we interact with the rest of the planet and we all need to be a part of that.
