Allowing poverty

We often think of poverty as not having money, and indeed there is an economic aspect to poverty. But I am struck by the phrase "Ah, poor Jesus...." It is not a passing piece of patronising sympathy but poverty means not only no money but a removal of choice and opportunity.

Jesus gives up His choices to allow us ours - as we contemplate the Last Supper and the Garden I cannot help but feel a little guilty at my bad choices - but a harder thought is that even though I stick my foot right into things, even though I can be stubborn and willful - even though......Jesus still wants me.

For all that we do, and we do all sorts, Jesus offers acceptance. Jesus endures pain and this does not make our world suddenly perfect, but it gives a clear route to the perfection - that union with God - which is waiting for us all.

Oh Lord Jesus, what are we doing to hurt you and how can we let you love us anyway?
