Today, as I was fighting with some weeds, I started to wonder whether it was worth it. After all if I just gave up and let things be, something would grow, perhaps not what I want to grow, but something.
Then I wondered about the Church and its institution, after all without church, something would grow, people have a sort of innate spirituality, don’t they? Why not let that find its way and give up on priests and doctrine?
Well yes, something would grow, nature does find its own bounds, but often in a messy and careless way. God seems to want a well tended, if not perfect garden, not just whatever happens to grow on any given day.
This order can be challenging to us, it means God has a will to see us prosper but to do so in a careful and cared for way. This challenge to nurture and be nurtured means that we have a task, not to grow wildly like weeds and refuse to budge, but to grow carefully and steadily alongside others, offering our growth and colour in the whole palette of God’s creation.
