I would like to propose a new meaning for these three letters which is quite a long way from what they currently mean – leave our lead. I am glad of the rain this morning but nagging at the back of my mind is whether we will get into Church and discover large puddles or worse sorts of damage where the lead has been stolen off the roof.
The last thieves were both tidy and inefficient in good measure. They climbed onto one of the most inaccessible parts of the roof then removed the tiles which they left neatly stacked in the valley. Most of the lead they removed disappeared but they left enough lying around to alert a churchyard worked to the fact that we had been robbed – again.
This is the second lead theft in a few months – not to mention the break-in – and we got off lightly compared to the theft and vandalism some churches suffered. Ecclesiastical Insurance reported a 25% increase in lead related claims last year – I fear it might even be higher this year. In 2010 nearly 1500 churches reported lead thefts.
I understand there is a complex web of things which lead people to risk life and limb to remove our rooves. I understand that it is likely to get worse before it gets better. But still, it is annoying, to say the least. It takes up huge amounts of financial and physical resources to fix and police our property – and we do not have the money or the personal – we are insured but even the insurance has limits – so please LOL alone!!!
