Heard, seen, looked at, touched

“We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life.”

These are the opening words from the First Letter of John and what a riot of the senses. And what a weekend to use our senses to soak in the good news of Jesus birth. Our churches will still be full of the sights and sounds of celebration and it is well worth the effort to show up and just allow the truth of God made human to soak in a little deeper.
Psalm 115 talks about God and contrasts the God who does what he pleases with the idols which are made for people to worship,

“Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
they make no sound in their throats.”

The idols are mute and impotent but Our God does whatsoever He pleases and what God pleases is to be born into human flesh, to make creation again and to give us our full humanity. This is no small and quiet moment and yet in a world of utter contradiction it is completely silent.

So as we come before the Throne of Grace let’s use our senses today, that which we have seen and heard, that which we have looked at and touched let us see and hear and look at and touch anew in this once again dawning age of God’s promise of presence and salvation.
