Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
In Mark's Gospel those who witness the Resurrection initially run away. Just like the young man disappearing into the night in the Garden, so those who have heard the Good News of the Angel leave both terrified and amazed.
Terrified and amazed sounds like all sorts of things. It sounds like going up the lift hill of a roller coaster (which I do not like) but looking out at the view. Terrified and amazed sounds like actually having that drivers license and driving on your own that first time. Terrified and amazed sounds like arriving home with a new baby and realizing that this little life is all up to you now.
What terrifies and amazes you - what moves you to the point of utter transformation. You see that is the point - that we are stirred so deeply by this momentous revelation of the resurrection that we are moved to the core. That we are changed and in that change that we are propelled to action.
In an age when there are real martyrs for our faith (there always have been but for the moment things are very apparent) we do not have the luxury of allowing terrified and amazed to be "on the shelf" words. They are not - think about what they mean. Today, this story, the Risen Christ needs to change you, shake you, make you fall down in wonder and praise. This moment needs to allow you your full humanity and hold up that full humanity in all its potential.
I will end with the same poem which I used at the Vigil
Whisper your prayers of disbelief
Shout your alleluias and then run
Run messengers of Christ
Run you who have the authority of heaven
The voice of the angels
And tell the Good News
- HE IS RISEN!
