Ascension

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Ascension. Where I grew up - and I think I have written this before - we went to Church on Ascension Day and then got the afternoon off - my kids will be taking SOLs. Such is life.

The Feast of the Ascension always falls on a Thursday - forty days after Easter - and as such is a bit of a poor relation feast day but should not be as after Easter and Christmas is is ranked up there with Pentecost and Trinity - which are coming hot on its heels.

Jesus spent those forty days with his disciples and then, the Bible tells us, was taken up into heaven. Our tradition marks events, marks time, carefully celebrates things and this event - the last earthly action of Our Lord is no exception.

But Ascension Day - like Good Friday - has fallen into a bit of disregard. We all have to decide for ourselves how important these days and times are to us. From personal experience, reading the stories is good, but celebrating them in community is a whole lot better.
