Superheroes

Yesterday, at the little league game, there were some pre-school kids running around and one of them had a cape on - he was a superhero. My husband commented that it would be great to be a superhero - "Hmmmm," I said, "It would be great to believe you could be a superhero."

That is something we let go of in adulthood - the ability to believe we can conquer evil through superhuman powers - but hang on - that whole Resurrection thing might give hope to our superhero longings after all.

One of the prayers in the Common Worship (Church of England) Morning Prayer service today is:

Lord Jesus, divine Son and eternal priest,
inspire us with the confidence of your final conquest of evil,
and grant that daily on our way
we may drink of the brook of your eternal life
and so find courage against all adversities;
for your mercy’s sake.

Give us confidence.....not in xray vision or the ability to fly but in the simply and profound fact that Jesus has conquered evil. That does not mean that Superman is out of a job, of course, junk still happens. But we are not subject to death and sin - we are children of light and in a way that gives us automatic superhero status.

Perhaps we should all wear capes on Ascension day just to prove the point that we really do believe that Jesus has done His work with evil and all of our many and wonderful gifts are turned over to His service in this new and exciting kingdom.
