Interruptions

If the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew is a bread an butter text for our faith then the information which St. Luke gives just before his version of the same event -

"Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God." Luke 6:12 - should be the yeast for our lives.

We should be very grateful to Luke for his careful noting of Our Lord's attention to prayer for it is in prayer that we truly find ourselves and God. Jesus knew this - taking the time to go away and pray - even though his peace would be short lived.

God understands the restrictions on our time - that we get interrupted - of not by legions of disciples then at least by children, or dogs needing walks or the phone ringing. All that is required of us is to try as hard as we can and to understand that all our life should flow from an active engagement with God in prayer.

This can take some planning and some determination - but not trying is not an option - Luke lets us know that Jesus cleared space in His day for prayer. Luke also lets us know that even Jesus' plans could be foiled by those crowds - but we can be sure that the dialogue Jesus sought to maintain with God is the same one that we are invited to and that God works powerfully - even in our interruptions.
