In the sermon today I talked a bit about not making God in our image - not falling into that trap of seeing God as too much like ourselves. I realized as I was wandering this afternoon that possibly it is even harder when we cannot grasp that God is anything like ourselves.

There might be all sorts of reasons for that. I know, personally, that although I love the theology and mystery of incarnation the actual nitty gritty of humanity bothers me and sometimes I want a nice neat fence between my messiness and God's (apparent tidiness).

What a terrible thing to see nothing in the face of the Divine that looks familiar - but that is so many folks experience. I do not think that we need to repaint God but rather that we need to create space and time and human places of hope and understanding where God can be seen and recognized. That is the challenge, that is the Church.
