General Convention is swinging into gear in Anaheim. I have to confess I am not a big fan of conventions and councils - I find the polity frustrating - however necessary they are for our business.
Conventions and councils represent steps between what has been and what will be - the what has been tends to be more comfortable - the what will be is determined by the courage and determination of the Council to listen to the voice of God.
Sometimes though, it seems as though the voice of God is rather quiet, with all those other voices gathered around microphones. I have been in the middle of such debates in Dioceses and find myself, unless I am very careful, no longer relying on God, but on reason and good sense and the nice person I sat next to at lunch (or not!).
As I pray for Convention - I pray that the space in Convention where God is.....just is.....is big and allows for less words and certainly less painful words.
