scaring ourselves silly

Walking the kids down the street to school I am interested to see just how macabre the front of people's houses are becoming. Haunted houses, graveyards and spiders webs have popped up all over the neighborhood. Houses where usually any hint of grime or bugs are dealt with swiftly have become home to much larger than life arachnids and all manner of slime and goo from a can.

I saw a preview for a TV show asking why we do this to ourselves - grime and scare - but I have lost the channel in the cable mele of entertainment. Oh well, I will stick with my confusion and my conviction that there is a fine line between fall entertainment and pushing darkness too far. It is saints and holy people which we celebrate not the dead and macabre. There are enough bad things happening in the world for real  - we need to think about who we are and what we stand for - not to avoid seasonal fun but to focus it around a celebration of holiness and not evil.
