I am always relieved on Trinity Sunday - after all the excitement of Feasts and Festivals things are once again back to normal - as we celebrate God in Trinity we come to a place of being who we are and where we are.
The Gospel at the Eucharist is the Great Commission in Matthew's Gospel. As we come into Ordinary time - and this is the bulk of the year - we need to pay attention that the way we are, what is normal for us is mission.
Yesterday I was walking back from the market and noticed a set of dusty footprints from a house which was being renovated to the pub next door. I smiled. But it also made me wonder what sort of footprints we leave as we wander through our daily lives - do we tell the story of our faith or do we tiptoe through, trying not to leave any impression at all.
These were bold footprints and that is what we are called to today - to step out and leave a mark on the road - a mark which tells a story and leads those around us on a journey to Christ.
The mystery of the Holy and Blessed Trinity is just that. There are plenty of good illustrations to help us latch on to the triune God, but it is indefinable because God is indefinable and as soon as we think we have a nice neat, controlled, boxed version of God we realize that it just might not work that way.
The mission to which we are called is nothing short of revolutionary. I am not suggesting that we all start shouting from street corners - but we do need to find that same level of courage and trust which the street preacher displays. We have to find ourselves as people of mystery, wrapped up in a God who is alive and wonderful.
