Being who?

I has a small, yellow, fluffy duck once which I named Cuthbert - the name came from the Northumbrian saint - had I had two perhaps the other one would have been called Aidan - who knows.

I think I spend a lot of time writing about being true to who we are - Cuthbert is a good example of being true to who you are called to be - not who you necessarily want to be and finding joy in it anyway. He was a monastic - and probably would have chosen the solitary life but was called to a preaching and teaching life until the end of his life, when he spent the last year or two as a hermit.

The Gospel reading from John is about being called to be too.... If you are who you say you are - Jesus tells the people ie. descendents of Abraham, then behave like it.

What are the character traits of the follower of Christ - faith, hope, love? And what do we often exhibit.......actually we often get it right but we can always get it better and where we get it wrong it seems too often is forgetting to have joy in doing the things we don't like so much.

Life is tough and bewildering right now and we are all called to step up to the plate and ask God what can I do - not only what I have always done - but which paths can I tread today which will further the kingdom, however uncomfortable that thought may make me.
