Smite free zone

I wonder how many people are afraid of God. This always worries me because I think then, if you are afraid of God, even at some subconscious level, you have to be a bit cautious about life and can never fully throw yourself into it.

If you read the Bible - God does seem scary and angry at times but there is always, alongside these negative emotions, transformation of one sort or another. And then in the New Testament all the bile and hatred of humanity is poured out in one great transformation for all of us on the cross.

Don't get me wrong, I think God is capable of anger but I also think that anger is not God's primary motivation - love is. We have that great verse John 3:16 today - God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son....... This is the God I know - not a God hurling things but a God embracing in incarnation.

If we are motivated my fear, or by lingering doubt about eternal consequences our lives will be less that if we embrace love and live as those who love and who are loved, ....that whosoever believes in Christ shall have eternal life (john 3:16b)
